Jamming & Nomming

Winter season is best season for spicy cravings and what’s better than tteokbokki, which is Korean rice cake with sweet, red chili sauce, and kimchi pancakes? But no Korean meal is complete without traditional beverage: makgeolli for a first.

My friend suggested we go to Don Day, a quaint Korean restaurant on 7th Ave in downtown Calgary. The setting struck me a little because it was if I was immediately transported to Korea, that is judging based on what I’ve seen from K-dramas. Need I mention that K-pop music was playing and oppas were our cooks? In short summary, this has been the most authentic and best tasting Korean food I’ve had in Calgary! I will definitely find myself coming back for more.

Perhaps I couldn’t wait for another Friday to come that I’ve resorted to casual attire. I am absolutely in love with GAP’s supersoft tees. I went a little crazy two weeks ago when I bought a couple pieces. They are so comfy and easy to wear. Highly recommended!

Exotic Taste & Bright Days

Perhaps holding on to hope for warm and bright days was not such a bad idea as today, the magical genie granted my wish. With the majority of the day spent outdoors: consisting of deep conversations and park walks, it was a good reminder of how satisfying life is wi-fi free, while well indulged in good company.
DSC03637For lunch, we had a first visit to Rose Garden Thai Restaurant located in Stephen Ave. The setting was very authentic, as well as the food. Though to be honest, it’s not the best Thai food I’ve had in Calgary. But if in need of a quick fix, it’s worth a visit. Their good hospitality and delicious, coconut rice is what would bring me back.

DSC03631 DSC03632DSC03630Since we supplied Naked Leaf teas at work and my manager urged me to pay a visit, I decided to do that today. We were drawn in by the warm and unique setting, not to mention the fragrant scents of tasteful teas. The owners were so friendly and accommodating. They informed us that with the purchase of ~100g of tea, we would obtain a free tin customized with local artists’ drawings. Knowing that my purchase supports local artists was enough to convince me to come back for more!
DSC03633My dark outfit may not have represented how I really felt today but to be fair, served me well when the night fell to a Chicago setting of strong winds. But overall, I’m thankful for today.

Lunch Date: ‘Roman Vibe’

Today’s attire was not the easiest to walk in and got my family and friends wondering where I was off to. My mom thought I was to attend a party, a friend felt as if I came from Italy and another explained it with the words ‘Roman Vibe’, which the latter I’m most fond of. It’s really difficult for me to leave the house without looking overdressed because it’s just the way I am. I love to dress up, make my old clothes appear new by mix & matching and I hope it inspires other people to enjoy fashion as much as I do. To end all curiosities, my day consisted of a lunch date and attending Japanese class.

We made a first visit to Oak Tree Tavern in Kensington and I ordered the classic fish & chips and beer combo. The batter of the fish was well executed, though the fries could have used less salt. As for the beer, which was Newcastle Brown Ale, it was one of the best I’ve had for a dark choice.SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESThere is something about matching a long sleeve top with a maxi skirt that I’m very fond of. Perhaps it is most comparable to the fashion during the Victorian Era: feminine and elegant. Since the top & bottom half pieces are both voluminous, the addition of the belt cinches in the waist to balance out the proportions.

Day 7: Ate to our Heart’s Content

To relieve ourselves of exhaustion and prepare for a tiring flight tomorrow, we decided to spend our last day in New Jersey. We never intended to go to Carlo’s Bakery because we thought it was far, but after finding out that it was a 10-min drive from our place, we paid a visit. Seeing its quaint exterior outside of the TV screen was very exciting! Upon entering, a strong whiff of baked goods could make anyone hungry. We took a ticket and waited until our number was called. Unfortunately, none of the cast from the show was in the shop.SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Even though I’m lactose intolerant, I took the chance of taking a taste of these pastries: Dark and White Chocolate Mousse! They were perfectly baked although after not having consumed sweet goods for a long while, I found them too sweet for my tastebuds.SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES For lunch, we went to Newport Mall. I had maki and salmon sashimi. One cannot expect much from mall sushi but this particular location made them exceptionally! If anything, it’s even better than other sushi restaurants I’ve visited. The sushi was fresh, warm and the salmon was fatty and tasty that melted into my mouth.SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES

Then, we went to get smoothies and found that they were made lactose free. How considerate was that place!? Our family officially holds the title of bottomless stomachs. Though as for I, this vacation from my diet shall end soon. I actually miss my healthy ways: oatmeal, multigrain and fruits and vegetables!

It was nice to have a relaxing day and the nice, friendly people of New Jersey only made it better! If I were to live here, could I have one of these houses? They have so much character!SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES
