Got Beat

I got beat on Boxing Day, beat by exhaustion. I woke up awfully early to avoid the crowd and long lines as best I can, which was not much of a success. On the bright side, I managed to purchase $644 worth of items for ~$240, 63% worth of savings!

Tips for future Boxing Days:

1) The food court is probably one of the busiest so grab a bite before leaving your house or eat at a nearby restaurant because good luck on finding an unoccupied table.

2) Wear comfy (and easy to change out of) clothes. Nothing is more frustrating than trying to ninja through the crowd in uncomfortable clothing, or when trying on clothes.

3) Avoid using large satchels because carrying one around would be too much of a hassle. Stick to backpacks or mini cross-body bags so that you can maneuver around easier. You’re also doing everyone else a favour, trust me.

Stress, Evanesco!

After my last final this morning, stress has (temporarily) disappeared from my life. To celebrate, I went to fangirl over Legolas… I mean, watch The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies! For someone who is not the biggest fan of movies with plenty of war scenes, this movie is a definite exception! You must see it and I’ll gladly re-watch it with you ; )

For today’s casual outfit, I resorted to denim on denim. Personally, I find that the best ways to wear this trend are a) Pairing separates that are of identical shade for a cohesive look or 2) Contrasting with black or white denim with the regular hue of blue. Finally, stick to basics and neutral colours for the rest of the outfit to not distract from the tough, denim look.

Never again will I order regular nachos if I have the option of pulled pork. This was the best movie food I’ve ever had!

And for dinner, Lebanese seesh.

Day for Exploration: Inglewood

It has been ages since I’ve wanted to pay a visit to one of Calgary’s coolest neighbourhoods: Inglewood. And since I’m an avid fan of cafés, I had to finally check out Gravity! The interior was absolutely posh and the food was superb. Is it a surprise that I didn’t order coffee? Go figure, they served Phil & Sebastian.

DSC04592I have a terrible habit of going shopping when I’m stressed, most specifically during exam times. Inglewood is definitely the place to go for all things local and unique! Of all the stores I visited, my top three favourites are listed below:

1) Reworks: This store is the absolute coolest! They are all about artistic innovations made from recycled materials, whilst supporting small businesses and/or local artists.

2) Olivier’s: Sweet tooth got you craving? This is heaven for all chocolate and candy lovers! Upon entrance, you are easily drawn in by the scrumptious whiff of their fresh, local goods. I made my last purchases of gifts & a little something for myself and family.

3) Phoenix Comics: How could I resist not going inside this haven of all things geek? What I appreciated about this particular comic store was it was well-organized, unlike most that are cluttered. It made maneuvering around and finding things easier. Also, if you collect pins like I do, they have plenty of awesome ones! They also have a vintage, yet pimp Ronald McDonald statue.

Since stores are individually built, prepare well to dress in warmth if you are to visit in the middle of winter like I. Layers will do.

Mirror, Mirror

…on the wall, who’s the weirdest of them all? I can neither confirm nor deny that.

It was the last day of classes and as excited as I was to end an awful semester, it was also bittersweet. I am to miss the nicest professors & the warm ambiance of having formed a sort of family in my language courses. And even if this means the storm of finals is near, I am not one you will find in joggers despite the desire for utmost comfort. Then again, soft cardigans, veggie pizza & cute pets that give you kisses would do the trick; comfort in warmth, heart & stomach!

Meet Norman, the bunny, and Toby, who gave me a kiss. They are the cutest & sweetest bunch!!

Notice that half of this grilled vegetable pizza has no cheese. And with that, I didn’t get just any regular coffee. The Irish did right in mixing coffee + whiskey.DSC04410

Winter Has Come

In all black with a hint of bloody red makes me seem like a walking Bubonic Plague; or at least that’s how I’ve been feeling these past few days. Sickness has struck me and I think it’s trying to tell me that I should be better prepared in keeping myself warm now that winter has come. A trip to Winners this weekend and voilà, a wool scarf and leather gloves that cost me less than $30. If there’s anything I like about winter, it’s that I get to wear leather, wool and suede.

(Mad-Eye) Moody is Set Free

The cloudy day is too bright for me, as if I was trapped away by an impostor for a long time and finally released… like (Mad-Eye) Moody.

I am still obsessed with wearing a ‘unitard’ that I wouldn’t be surprised if I actually bought one in the future. I tried my best to dress ‘normal’ today by initially putting on a pea coat and scarf, but I found that I don’t feel comfortable dressing in bright colours anymore. The bright pink details should be sufficient, right? Because whoever saw an aspiring, part-time poet in colour? I think my style is currently in sync with my poems: dark and sarcastic.

On a more technical note, my advocacy for the unitard effect, in all its simplicity & chicness, is a great way to showcase interesting pieces. A colour blocked coat like mine, or one that has pattern, are good examples.

Jamming & Nomming

Winter season is best season for spicy cravings and what’s better than tteokbokki, which is Korean rice cake with sweet, red chili sauce, and kimchi pancakes? But no Korean meal is complete without traditional beverage: makgeolli for a first.

My friend suggested we go to Don Day, a quaint Korean restaurant on 7th Ave in downtown Calgary. The setting struck me a little because it was if I was immediately transported to Korea, that is judging based on what I’ve seen from K-dramas. Need I mention that K-pop music was playing and oppas were our cooks? In short summary, this has been the most authentic and best tasting Korean food I’ve had in Calgary! I will definitely find myself coming back for more.

Perhaps I couldn’t wait for another Friday to come that I’ve resorted to casual attire. I am absolutely in love with GAP’s supersoft tees. I went a little crazy two weeks ago when I bought a couple pieces. They are so comfy and easy to wear. Highly recommended!

Exotic Taste & Bright Days

Perhaps holding on to hope for warm and bright days was not such a bad idea as today, the magical genie granted my wish. With the majority of the day spent outdoors: consisting of deep conversations and park walks, it was a good reminder of how satisfying life is wi-fi free, while well indulged in good company.
DSC03637For lunch, we had a first visit to Rose Garden Thai Restaurant located in Stephen Ave. The setting was very authentic, as well as the food. Though to be honest, it’s not the best Thai food I’ve had in Calgary. But if in need of a quick fix, it’s worth a visit. Their good hospitality and delicious, coconut rice is what would bring me back.

DSC03631 DSC03632DSC03630Since we supplied Naked Leaf teas at work and my manager urged me to pay a visit, I decided to do that today. We were drawn in by the warm and unique setting, not to mention the fragrant scents of tasteful teas. The owners were so friendly and accommodating. They informed us that with the purchase of ~100g of tea, we would obtain a free tin customized with local artists’ drawings. Knowing that my purchase supports local artists was enough to convince me to come back for more!
DSC03633My dark outfit may not have represented how I really felt today but to be fair, served me well when the night fell to a Chicago setting of strong winds. But overall, I’m thankful for today.

Camouflaging

20141013_152522For Thanksgiving, my family and I went to the park to take pictures of the beautiful scenery. Not even realizing until later, I was dressed as if intended to camouflage against the colours of nature (with the exception of my bright hat).

Yellow for Hong Kong

As many of you are probably already well aware, there is a pro-democracy protest occurring in Hong Kong. It hasn’t been pretty for protestors that had to face tear gas and stand under the heat stroke or rain for hours. A friend of mine invited me to wear yellow in support for Hong Kong and despite not attending UBC any longer, I was more than willing to show my support from afar. I pray for all the protestors working hard for what they believe in!SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES1) Long Sleeve Shirt: Borrowed from Sister | 2) ‘Skirt’ (which is actually a dress): Wet Seal | 3) Belt: Gifted | 4) Booties: Nine West
