Day for Exploration: Inglewood

It has been ages since I’ve wanted to pay a visit to one of Calgary’s coolest neighbourhoods: Inglewood. And since I’m an avid fan of cafés, I had to finally check out Gravity! The interior was absolutely posh and the food was superb. Is it a surprise that I didn’t order coffee? Go figure, they served Phil & Sebastian.

DSC04592I have a terrible habit of going shopping when I’m stressed, most specifically during exam times. Inglewood is definitely the place to go for all things local and unique! Of all the stores I visited, my top three favourites are listed below:

1) Reworks: This store is the absolute coolest! They are all about artistic innovations made from recycled materials, whilst supporting small businesses and/or local artists.

2) Olivier’s: Sweet tooth got you craving? This is heaven for all chocolate and candy lovers! Upon entrance, you are easily drawn in by the scrumptious whiff of their fresh, local goods. I made my last purchases of gifts & a little something for myself and family.

3) Phoenix Comics: How could I resist not going inside this haven of all things geek? What I appreciated about this particular comic store was it was well-organized, unlike most that are cluttered. It made maneuvering around and finding things easier. Also, if you collect pins like I do, they have plenty of awesome ones! They also have a vintage, yet pimp Ronald McDonald statue.

Since stores are individually built, prepare well to dress in warmth if you are to visit in the middle of winter like I. Layers will do.

Knit Racerback

I’m starting to fall in love with knits, but when it comes to maintenance, I’m not much of a fan. I have ruined way too many, expensive pieces of clothing due to laziness. Although most ‘Dry Clean Only’ items are made of the best fabrics, they are quite inconvenient.

Enough exposure of my Snorlax personality and more on this knit racerback. Knit is a technique often used for thick sweaters, but have you heard of a (little) see-through, racerback? And in a mixture of blue & red? I’m sold. This is why Club Monaco is one of my favourite stores.

DSC04383Not many people wear halter necks because one must find the ‘right’ kind in order to rock it. Personally, I find that my shoulders are on the broader side. If the straps on this top were any thinner, my shoulders would appear broader. The depth of halter tops is another factor to consider. Some styles are made with round necks and this constrictive construction is not flattering to shorter necks. Therefore, if you want an illusion of a longer neck, choose pieces with a deeper neckline. Try on & experiment with several halter tops in order to learn and find what’s ideal for your own body type.DSC04391DSC04392DSC04386

On a completely different side note, I went to Don Day again! Samgyeopsal wrapped with jalapeño and gochujang is so good, but incredibly spicy!DSC04401 Oh Calgary, you looked pretty tonight.DSC04397

Winter Has Come

In all black with a hint of bloody red makes me seem like a walking Bubonic Plague; or at least that’s how I’ve been feeling these past few days. Sickness has struck me and I think it’s trying to tell me that I should be better prepared in keeping myself warm now that winter has come. A trip to Winners this weekend and voilà, a wool scarf and leather gloves that cost me less than $30. If there’s anything I like about winter, it’s that I get to wear leather, wool and suede.

(Mad-Eye) Moody is Set Free

The cloudy day is too bright for me, as if I was trapped away by an impostor for a long time and finally released… like (Mad-Eye) Moody.

I am still obsessed with wearing a ‘unitard’ that I wouldn’t be surprised if I actually bought one in the future. I tried my best to dress ‘normal’ today by initially putting on a pea coat and scarf, but I found that I don’t feel comfortable dressing in bright colours anymore. The bright pink details should be sufficient, right? Because whoever saw an aspiring, part-time poet in colour? I think my style is currently in sync with my poems: dark and sarcastic.

On a more technical note, my advocacy for the unitard effect, in all its simplicity & chicness, is a great way to showcase interesting pieces. A colour blocked coat like mine, or one that has pattern, are good examples.

Not in the Mood Though Mod

Today offered a series of unfortunate events but at least, I was well dressed for it. Perhaps I foreshadowed my own fate with the monochromatic Mod. I am unaware whether it’s because of Halloween, or apparently looking like Michael Jackson, that I have been gravitating towards wearing almost all or if not, all black. To my defence (and all who are fond of wearing black), perhaps I’m at a phase of ‘less is more’ and wanting to achieve a vibe of class without needing to wear a dress. Or, I could simply be channeling my inner garçon.

1 DSC03514 There is nothing more pleasing than finding designer pieces at more than half the cost. Yesterday, I bought this cool Ralph Lauren biker jacket on my first visit to Better On You, a consignment store in downtown Calgary. I adore the quilted, shoulder detail, button clasped, round collar and its perfect fit. A fitted jacket is definitely a staple in anyone’s closet.DSC03519 DSC03516I acknowledge than I have more than enough black and white shoes, but after finding these Stuart Weitzman‘s (a brand that I dared not dream to obtain during this status of broke, university student), I had to make an addition to my collection. One of the things that made my day was when a woman came up to me, complimented me on my shoes and asked me about them. There is nothing more satisfying than being acknowledged on my style (most especially by a stranger), let alone being asked to inform them about fashion. It’s moments like this that motivate me to never stop pursuing fashion as my ultimate career.

(Scroll ahead and you will be creeped out at how cheap I got these for!)

Jumping for Autumn

Autumn is my favourite season: the leaves fall beautifully and crisps dry, rustling, the sun shines brightly though not scorching and layers can finally be worn! For today’s outfit, I wore denim on denim for a bold statement paired with the colours of nature: brown and green. I opted for an all blue and white outfit to draw attention to my boots that has an interesting, yet oddly placed cut-out.
SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESSAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESI tried to do the classic ‘throw the leaves’ picture yet failed miserably with my questionable expression.SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURESSAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES These lace socks added that extra, pretty detail. Double A

Another day, another button down. Button downs are one of my favourites because one could wear it both casually and in formal occasions. It is a classic and timeless piece that can be worn all year: by itself in the summer or underneath a knit sweater for when the weather becomes cooler. I am especially fond of this short sleeved button down because of its crisp collar, shoulder padded sleeves and pastel pink colour! Supporting Canada with Double A: American Apparel.

My Idea of Streetwear

As much as I love my button downs and girly dresses, I’m also a big fan of rompers! Most ladies find rompers inconvenient, but personally, I don’t. It is a fun and comfortable piece!
SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES Even though the romper itself has print, the addition of a differently printed cardigan does not clash because of the colours identical between them. To keep the romper and cardigan as point of interest, I kept it minimal in wearing simple, black accessories.SAMSUNG CAMERA PICTURES1) Elephant Romper: Angie | 2) Snake Printed Cardigan: Maison Scotch (similar here) | 3) Boots: Dolce Vita (similar here) | 4) Backpack: Vintage from Mom | 5) Round Sunglasses: Local Store in Calgary
