Stress, Evanesco!

After my last final this morning, stress has (temporarily) disappeared from my life. To celebrate, I went to fangirl over Legolas… I mean, watch The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies! For someone who is not the biggest fan of movies with plenty of war scenes, this movie is a definite exception! You must see it and I’ll gladly re-watch it with you ; )

For today’s casual outfit, I resorted to denim on denim. Personally, I find that the best ways to wear this trend are a) Pairing separates that are of identical shade for a cohesive look or 2) Contrasting with black or white denim with the regular hue of blue. Finally, stick to basics and neutral colours for the rest of the outfit to not distract from the tough, denim look.

Never again will I order regular nachos if I have the option of pulled pork. This was the best movie food I’ve ever had!

And for dinner, Lebanese seesh.

Day Out in Wang

I finished my first exam this morning and since my next and last isn’t for another while, I decided to make a visit to Kensington: Naked Leaf & Pages! Teas and books are always good presents.

I finally wore my Alexander Wang x HM purchase, that is this cool jacket! There is no other way to dress a Wang piece than with monochrome, or in my case, all black. Unaware, the works of flash brings out a surprise of the reflective detail embedded in this jacket! Très cool, non?

DSC04514 DSC04519DSC04507 DSC04509Almost everything I wore today are either limited edition, unavailable online or vintage, so no links for tonight. However, I hope you found inspiration!

Mirror, Mirror

…on the wall, who’s the weirdest of them all? I can neither confirm nor deny that.

It was the last day of classes and as excited as I was to end an awful semester, it was also bittersweet. I am to miss the nicest professors & the warm ambiance of having formed a sort of family in my language courses. And even if this means the storm of finals is near, I am not one you will find in joggers despite the desire for utmost comfort. Then again, soft cardigans, veggie pizza & cute pets that give you kisses would do the trick; comfort in warmth, heart & stomach!

Meet Norman, the bunny, and Toby, who gave me a kiss. They are the cutest & sweetest bunch!!

Notice that half of this grilled vegetable pizza has no cheese. And with that, I didn’t get just any regular coffee. The Irish did right in mixing coffee + whiskey.DSC04410

Knit Racerback

I’m starting to fall in love with knits, but when it comes to maintenance, I’m not much of a fan. I have ruined way too many, expensive pieces of clothing due to laziness. Although most ‘Dry Clean Only’ items are made of the best fabrics, they are quite inconvenient.

Enough exposure of my Snorlax personality and more on this knit racerback. Knit is a technique often used for thick sweaters, but have you heard of a (little) see-through, racerback? And in a mixture of blue & red? I’m sold. This is why Club Monaco is one of my favourite stores.

DSC04383Not many people wear halter necks because one must find the ‘right’ kind in order to rock it. Personally, I find that my shoulders are on the broader side. If the straps on this top were any thinner, my shoulders would appear broader. The depth of halter tops is another factor to consider. Some styles are made with round necks and this constrictive construction is not flattering to shorter necks. Therefore, if you want an illusion of a longer neck, choose pieces with a deeper neckline. Try on & experiment with several halter tops in order to learn and find what’s ideal for your own body type.DSC04391DSC04392DSC04386

On a completely different side note, I went to Don Day again! Samgyeopsal wrapped with jalapeño and gochujang is so good, but incredibly spicy!DSC04401 Oh Calgary, you looked pretty tonight.DSC04397

(Mad-Eye) Moody is Set Free

The cloudy day is too bright for me, as if I was trapped away by an impostor for a long time and finally released… like (Mad-Eye) Moody.

I am still obsessed with wearing a ‘unitard’ that I wouldn’t be surprised if I actually bought one in the future. I tried my best to dress ‘normal’ today by initially putting on a pea coat and scarf, but I found that I don’t feel comfortable dressing in bright colours anymore. The bright pink details should be sufficient, right? Because whoever saw an aspiring, part-time poet in colour? I think my style is currently in sync with my poems: dark and sarcastic.

On a more technical note, my advocacy for the unitard effect, in all its simplicity & chicness, is a great way to showcase interesting pieces. A colour blocked coat like mine, or one that has pattern, are good examples.

Plaid is Rad

Ok, so that title is for the purpose of rhyming because to be honest, I have a love and hate relationship with plaid. And the explanation as to why is for another time.

It has been ~a year when I last wore this jacket, which is probably a good estimation as I found my long, ‘lost’ debit card inside one of the pockets. This also means that winter has come. Sadly. The temperature dropping to -21°C (minus the windchill) explains how everyone, including myself, are waddling like penguins. Perhaps skates would have been a better choice over rain boots.

DSC03772

Since plaid is usually colourful and is a busy pattern, it can be tricky to work with. The easiest solution would be to pair it with basics. If you require more colour outside black, incorporate accessories that are of the same colour from the plaid.

And mischievous Raiza strikes….

60s Knit

Inspired by Free People and stuck in 60s mod, voilà! But who can forget iconic Twiggy and her spider lashes? Sure, I’ll never be as pretty as her, but she is such an inspiration that the least I can do is imitation. So a couple layers of mascara later….
DSC03657 DSC03651 For those non-Canadians or simply do not know, Remembrance Day is soon. It is when we commemorate soldiers that fought and died for our country. As a sign of appreciation and respect, we wear these red poppies. Canada wouldn’t be as it is today if it wasn’t for their brave hearts.DSC03660DSC03673Back to a lighter note, I thrifted this ‘made in Italy‘ sweater for $24! How crazy of a steal is that? It is a size too big, but the oversize fit just adds to the ‘cozy factor’. And if that’s not enough knit, why not throw in these thigh-high socks.

Though the softness of all these knits make me appear friendly and in all honesty, I’m not the friendliest. So as to keep my guard up, perhaps a spiked, statement necklace and stack of geometric earrings will help.DSC03669 DSC036791) Sweater: Thrifted (similar here) | 2) Corduroy Shorts: American Apparel | 3) Tights: Claire’s (similar here) | 4) Thigh-Highs: Free People (Gifted) | 5) Oxfords: Arnold Churgin (similar here) | 6) Necklace: Local Store in Granville St. Vancouver (similar here) | 7) Earrings: F21 & DIY

Zodiac Signs

It wasn’t until much later that I decided to get on the crop top trend with this American Apparel piece. I wasn’t exactly fond of having to show my non-existent abs, though liked the idea of an illusion of longer legs. Solution: wear high waisted bottoms! Oui, there is a little peek of skin but thanks to today’s workout that it’s a little under control.

Geometry and Patterns

Foremost, excuse the amateur, overexposed/dark photos because I lacked a photographer (my sister) today.

Mixing different shapes and patterns is one of the trickiest things to do, yet when well executed, is purely genius. I am still experimenting with this trend and it is indeed difficult. For an attempt, I paired this geometric button down with my printed sling hobo bag; a classic combination that I’ve tried before. Though the addition of colourful and geometric earrings made this outfit a little more of crazy… in a good way (at least I’d like to think so).

What I love about these earrings is that they are by locally made (by Adrian Martinus in collaboration with Anne Tranholm) and eco-friendly because they are made from recycled materials! This picture does very little justice at such an incredible piece.

Homme Pour Le Jour: Inspired by Menswear

With my new haircut, I have become better inspired in blending it all together with my outfits. Today, I attempted to style it in a slick back and I must say, I have much more respect for folks who do this on a daily basis. Ladies, men have it difficult too when styling their hair. Personally, I found that achieving this style is much more difficult than curling my hair (that is when I still had the length to do so :P).

I lacked a texturizer but this proved to be more than sufficient for my first attempt.

But what’s a slick back without an outfit to match? I have mentioned to several of my friends that I wish men’s clothing would be available in my size but as this is not the case, I have to settle for menswear inspired pieces to play with. What I love about menswear is the classic, clean and crisp silhouettes, giving space for attention to interesting patterns and textures in the fabrics. One of my favourite trends is ankle jeans paired with leather oxfords and a pair of vibrant socks.

I had so much fun styling this whole ensemble and I must say, my efforts have not gone to waste as I’ve been turning heads this morning. Just have fun with it as fashion should be!
